So unless you’ve got a Switch or one of Nintendo’s older consoles, you’re not going to be playing Mario Kart any time soon – but that’s where I’m here to help. You see Nintendo is Nintendo and its first-party IPs stay on its first-party platforms, with precious few exceptions. I’ve found some awesome automobile alternatives that you can play right now on PC. Devastating.Įven while many of us will have taken it for a spin at a friend’s house, it’s tragic, really, that we’re not able to do so at home. Which is all the more remarkable given that it’s very much a Nintendo property, and we all know what that means – no PC port. Over the years Mario Kart has become a staple in the gaming world – it’s difficult to find anyone who hasn’t had a go at one of the games at some point. Each instalment is a compulsive, competitive racing game with the added spice of collectible powerups, implausible environments, and a deceptively wholesome aesthetic, and is considered a crucial system seller for every Nintendo console. Players race said characters around physically impossible tracks, jostling for victory and cheating with that f**king blue shell when they’re not good enough to win clean. Mario Kart takes Nintendo’s famous first-party characters, such as Donkey Kong and the titular Mario, and puts them in go-karts equipped with weaponised turtle shells. It’s only to establish our parameters for this list that I’m going to remind you anyway. IGN stated that the gameplay mechanics defined the genre.Even though a Mario Kart game has never graced our noble PC towers, I know you’ve heard of it. Reviewers praised Super Mario Kart's gameplay, describing the battle mode as "addictive" and the single player gameplay as "incredible". Hopping helps a kart execute tighter turns: the kart makes a short hop and turns in the air, speeding off in the new direction when it lands. Power sliding allows a kart to maintain its speed while turning, although executing the manoeuvre for too long causes the kart to spin. The game features advanced manoeuvre such as power sliding and hopping. Coins are also lost when karts are struck by power-ups or fall off the tracks. Having coins also helps players when their kart is hit by another: instead of spinning and losing control, they lose a coin. By running over these coins, a kart collects them and increases its top speed. Lines of coins are found on the tracks in competitive race modes. Computer players have specific special powers associated with each character, that they are able to use throughout the race. A kart that obtains the star power-up is temporarily invulnerable to attack. Power-ups, such as the ability to throw shells and bananas, allow racers to hit others with the objects, causing them to spin and lose control. Tiles marked with question marks are arrayed on the race tracks they give special abilities (power-ups) to a player's kart if the vehicle passes over them. There is also a battle mode in which the aim is to attack the karts of the other human players. The goal of the game is to either finish a race ahead of other racers, who are controlled by the computer and other players, or complete a circuit in the fastest time. During a race, the player's viewpoint is from behind his or her kart. When the light turns green, the race or battle officially begins. In order for them to begin driving, Lakitu will appear with a traffic light hanging on his fishing pole at the starting line, which starts the countdown. During the game, players take control of one of eight Mario franchise characters and drive karts around tracks with a Mario franchise theme. Super Mario Kart is a kart racing game featuring several single and multiplayer modes. ![]()
